Sangam India
|
In today's fast paced, rapidly globalizing world, India is changing at lightning speed. Unfortunately, too many Indians, children and adults alike, are being left behind in this rush for success. Sangam India dreams of a future where our communities unite to form a new India, a nation in which we all join hands. Based currently in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Sangam India plans to adopt one disadvantaged community at a time and to guide it toward self-sufficiency and to provide support for a higher standard of living. We are especially focused on children, who are the leaders of tomorrow. We aim to foster in them a strong sense of civic responsibility.
Sangam means 'joining' or 'union' in many Indian languages. This concept of unity pervades every aspect of our work at Sangam India. Through our projects and initiatives we are creating greater unity within and among India's communities.
Who We AreWe are a group of health science students living in Porur, Chennai. We began our work in early 2008 with distributions of food to slum residents, and we have grown in membership and vision since. Our members come from a variety of courses and from all years.
Our MissionSangam India is based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and is concerned with slums in the region. Our current focus is the Ramavaram slum, located on the Adyar River next to the Miot Hospital. We aim to improve the living standards of this underprivileged community by enhancing the quality of its education, health, nutrition, sanitation and hygiene.
Our ApproachSangam India works by building personal relationships with the members of our target communities. We use a "buddy-system" approach with the children to provide positive role models and to be able to pay personal attention to individual children and their specific needs. By organizing constructive and educational activities, we hope to combine education and value-based learning with recreation and team-building. Sangam India collects financial gifts to purchase equipment necessary for its medical and educational initiatives. We also collect donations in kind for distribution to slum residents. In order to work further towards our goal of community self-sufficiency, we are hoping to offer vocational training for adolescents and adults.
Our Work So FarWe have made several trips to the Ramavaram slum over the past year and we have organized a wide range of activities. We have provided nutritious meals to the residents, played games with the children, conducted a field survey to gauge the current needs of the residents, sponsored higher education, and coordinated a several medical camps.
What You Can DoWe need volunteers who are willing to take some time to assist on event days. We have a large and enthusiastic group, but as a growing project, we are always in need of more help. In addition, we need financial assistance for large projects such as scholarships and medical camps. We are also looking for donations in kind:
